Wenatchee police have made contact with a suspect in a downtown car prowl and burglary last week and expect to make an arrest soon.

The Yakima man is wanted for a car prowl at the Riverside 9 apartment complex, then a burglary at Ag Supply on Wenatchee Avenue early Thursday morning.

Dewalt battery packs were stolen in the car prowl at about 2 a.m., then at about 2:18 a.m. a window was smashed at Ag Supply. The burglar used bolt cutters to cut a chain holding a chainsaw, then stole the chainsaw, said Detective Sgt. Ryan Weatherman of the Wenatchee Police Department.

A suspect in a pickup that was pulling a utility trailer was located about 2:50 a.m. in the Office Depot parking lot, said Capt. Edgar Reinfeld.

There was property in the suspect’s vehicle that appeared to match what was stolen in the car prowl, he said.

“The vehicle fled and they did not have crimes that met standards for the pursuit laws, so they did not pursue, despite it being about 3 in the morning and nobody around,” Reinfeld said

But about 40 minutes later, the pickup was spotted at Hilton Gardens Hotel on North Worthen Street. The suspect had fled, however.

After a warrant was obtained, the suspect’s vehicle and hotel room were searched and numerous tools were found in the room.

Those tools, it turned out, belonged to the suspect, Weatherman said.

“He had just removed them from his car and brought them to his room because he didn’t trust anybody, which is kind of ironic,” Weatherman said.

Also of note was the fact there were about 200 law enforcement officers staying at the Hilton Gardens that night attending a Washington Council of Police & Sheriffs event.

Having identified the suspect and made contact with him, police are now arranging to take him into custody, Weatherman said.

The items taken in the car prowl have been recovered, but not the chainsaw, Weatherman said.
