If you're yet to invest in the zeitgeisty wellbeing gadget that is the massage gun, you'd now be two steps behind the curve. Market leader in eking out aches and pains, Therabody, has just launched its all-new TheraFace Pro, a device that adjusts percussive therapy tech for the face, throwing in the bells and whistles of state-of-the-art skincare treatments. Consider it a multi-talented facialist you can keep in your pocket.

With no fewer than eight different modalities, you'd probably be better off asking what the TheraFace isn't before you ask what it is. Percussive therapy massage is at the core of the device, now fine-tuned to work on the 40 facial muscles rather than those more developed in the body. Its primary function? To reduce tension and relax the areas of the face prone to tightness – an upshot that can be felt instantly if, like me, you find it hard to wind down before bed or clench your jaw in your sleep.

Unlike massage guns at large, though, the TheraFace also taps into a smorgasbord of complementary treatments. Anyone who's fallen deep into a TikTok skincare wormhole of late will know all too well the myriad facial fads out there. From microcurrent face masks to jade and ice rollers, the list (and TikTok FYP) goes on and on. Regardless of the science behind them, together they make for a messy bathroom countertop and a costly shopping spree. And, though we’ve done our bit to bring you the benefits of treatments such as LED therapy and derma rolling, the fact remains that many of these products have so far been heavily marketed towards and adopted by female consumers.

So it's exciting to see such grooming wizardry incorporated into the massage gun format – a product with universal appeal. Therabody has carefully chosen its facial health add-ons based on scientific research, including LED light therapy (blue, red and infrared) proven to reduce wrinkles around the eyes and combat acne; a microcurrent attachment that firms and tightens skin; a cleansing brush to make your face wash of choice go further, plus hot and cold rings to reduce facial puffiness and improve radiance.

It may all sound like a faff on paper, but in truth, the beauty of the TheraFace Pro lies in its simplicity. Each attachment clips into the handheld base unit via magnets to be used in unison, with the massage attachment pommelling away as add-ons like the cryo ring reduce puffiness at the same time. An OLED screen intuitively picks up on the attachment in use, and a beep every 15 seconds handily prompts you to move to a new area, a bit like an electric toothbrush. The cherry on the cake? It can all be neatly packed away into a bag no bigger than your average beard trimmer.

If that still sounds like grooming gimmickry, Therabody's stats don't lie. Some 89 per cent of people who've used the TheraFace Pro to date have observed skin rejuvenation, decreased wrinkles and an improvement in facial muscle tone. I, too, have been impressed by the early results (and have been the subject of many more compliments than usual), having become especially fond of reliant on the cold ring attachment for a quick pre-work de-puff. The cleansing ring has also streamlined my bedtime routine, working notably harder than application by hand, and I've even been partial to using the microcurrent ring to effectively contour my face before an evening out.

There's no questioning that this is an impressive piece of kit. It conveniently pools together the latest in facial health technology and, at £375, for a sum much smaller than its individual parts (even with the hot and cold rings, which cost an additional £79). And while this intersection of wellness and skincare might have had its major moment during lockdowns, our increasingly busy schedules make the multitasking TheraFace all the more appealing in the post-Covid world we're now navigating. Mine takes pride of place next to my toothbrush and trimmer, and yours should too.
